How to Handle Conflict

The theme for today’s lesson is “we can choose how we awant to respond to conflict”. Discuss the different approaches below:
Aggressive: Intentionally doing something to hurt another person (physically or emotionally) to make them do something they don’t want to do.
Passive: Going along with what someone wants you to do even though you don’t really want o.
Assertive: Standing up for yourself while showing respect for the other person.
Which one of these options would achieve the best outcome? Why do you think so?

Some hints to help you communicate when dealing with conflict:
- Think, pause, breathe, stay calm
- Actively listen
- Control your voice
- Be nice
- Focus on the issue
- Don’t make it personal
- Stay on topic (only discuss the issue, not the issues that occurred in the past 12 months)
- Acknowledge the actual issue
- Empathise with how the other person feels
- Don’t interrupt
- Accept other people’s opinions and how they feel
- Agree to disagree
Unlock or block
Organise yourselves into pairs. Face one another and lock your hands together. One student has to get the other to unlock their hands without touching them Students must think of a reason why their partner has to unlock their hands Once completed with that partner find a new partner. Adopt a new strategy to encourage them to open their fist.
